New Orleans after the fact

January 25, 2010

Another year of heartbreak yet again for me and Vikings fans around the world. After digesting what happened, I somewhat gathered my thoughts on a blown opportunity to finally get a shot at football immortality. Is the best team representing the NFC this year? its a valid argument but I think you have to say the answer is yes. Even though we bruised and battered the New Orleans Saints and had a great game plan for the high powered offense in their own house. The fact that we turned the ball over 5 times and put the ball on the turf 6 times is the only variable. All year the Vikings never had more than 3 turnovers in a single game. If you blame Brett Favre for this, your are missing a lot of things and I have to question your football mind. First off, Brett Favre gave a performance for the ages and managed the game perfectly even on 1 foot. Adrian Peterson will have to admit his weakness this off season and fix his fumbling problem. Its unacceptable to fumble as many times as he has. I saw him come out to the players tunnel as the Saints were celebrating. He was the only Viking who stayed out and was standing next to HOF Vikings coach Bud Grant. I hope seeing the Saints celebrate lights some kind of self improving fire under his ass. Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian also turned the ball over who haven’t fumbled all year. What will live in my mind forever and will NEVER be able to get over, is the 12 men in the huddle penalty. I already know Childress and he even confirmed it in his post game press conference, that without the penalty they run the ball. I thought that even with the penalty, they should have run a draw to Chester Taylor. Even if he gets one yard, your giving Ryan Longwell a chance to kick us into a super bowl. The same Ryan Longwell who I saw kick a 54 game winning field goal outdoors at Soldier Field 2 years ago. But for the long pain of Vikings fans, I think this will rank up there with the Drew Pearson catch of 1975, the Gary Anderson missed field goal in 1998, and the 41-0 from New York in 2001. Obviously Brett Favre didnt make any comment to come back next year and I cant blame him. His running back and offensive line betrayed him and he has to be in unbearable physical and mental pain. He is addicted to the game of football. The one thing that will eat away at him all offseason wasn’t the last interception he threw, but the 5-8 yards of open field he had open to run. Even though he was on one foot and really never ran all year, trust me I could have at least hopped on foot for 4 yards because the saints dropped back into a zone dog coverage once Brett bootlegged. That will eat away at him all offseason and will be one of the little things that makes him come back to the purple next year. The fact that he has a second year in his contract which guarantees 13 million also helps. He outplayed Drew Brees and without him, we aren’t in this game and when you think in the big picture we would literally never be in this game. Maybe we make the playoffs but probably we would have been one and done. The man threw 26 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions at home this year. You will NEVER again see that in a 16 game season.  For the performance he gave at his age is the best I have ever seen in the playoffs but the sad part is that at the end of the day, its in a loss. So here I am again sitting here the day after. Same empty feeling I have had since I became a Vikings fan in 1987. I should be fully recovered by April, remodeled, and drinking the koolaid in Mankato Minnesota at training camp in July.
